With a very complex interior design, the Coronet Grove Residence by Maddison Architects is located in the Beaumaris suburb of Melbourne, Australia. The dynamic architecture speaks about the beauty of combining raw design with the love for details. Featuring 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, the residence has sophisticated open spaces and showcases a meticulous attention to details. The neighborhood had a deep impact on the design of the house and this led to an amazing connection to the surroundings. Panoramas of the Port Phillip Bay can be easily enjoyed from the long and narrow terrace, but also from the large windows that allow light to constantly create elegant shadows in each room. The architects have a better understanding of the surprising interior and exterior of the house: “Formally, the house is split into two rectangular boxes. The black, zinc-clad southern box encloses living, kitchen and outdoor spaces, and cantilevers out beyond its ground floor enclosure to capture 270° Port Phillip Bay views. The discrete activities of the house, such as sleeping and bathing, are accommodated with the separate masonry northern wing.”

Inspiration from the land of dragons and emperors! Today we are featuring some living room designs from Pinchen Design, a Chinese based designer whose rooms exude comfort and luxury. Using texture, pattern and colour the rooms have been designed with real application in mind.It might be hard to pick a favourite!

The warmth of natural timbers and leather result in a welcoming living room. With the open fire on it would be a haven in winter.

We came across a beautiful residence that presents an unequalled mixture of simplicity and modern style. Created by Greek architecture firm Varda Studio, the home named Adamos Residence is a luxurious collection of elegant spaces located in Limassol, Cyprus. The architects played with wood, stone and light to create unique living spaces that perforate through the usual interior design in order to offer an interesting choice of furniture, materials and decorations. Highlighting every room with the help of wood and powerful colours like orange and yellow, the interior design seems to be integrated in the inhabitant’s lifestyle. A large and airy living room can be seen right from the entrance. The raised deck in the living space delimitates the hallway, while the wood theme continues on the next floor. Modern staircases made from wood and glass offer a quick look into the interior design of the upstairs spaces. The Marilyn Monroe room divider in the bedroom is the perfect choice to express the elegant feeling of the home.

Sensational Light Project in Vancouver: Fire with Fire

Fire with Fire is a remarkable art project from Isabelle Hayeur put to practice in Downtown Eastside, Vancouver. What you see in the photos and video below is actually a site-specific video installation, created with the help of video projectors and 3 blu-ray players. Here is more information from the artist: “In 1886, soon after the city was incorporated, the Great Vancouver Fire swept down on the neighborhood’s and razed almost all of it to the ground. The video installation Fire with Fire recalls this troubled period of Vancouver’s history. It also alludes to the neighborhood present conditions by reminding us that many lives have been consumed there, worn down by years of homelessness, drug use, street prostitution, and violence.” Be sure to check out the video at the end of the post for a general idea. Blub Lounge Club in Barcelona, the Experience of a World Underseas

Blub lounge is an intriguing looking lounge club designed by Elia Felices Interiorismo and located in Barcelona, mimicking a small sub-aquatic world. Here is the description we received from the project developers: “The first immersion takes place as we come through the door with its vegetable, organic imagery. The open interior space enables circuits of interaction to be established. Movement between the different public areas has been made easier by the use of divisions built into the walls, using new elements such as the blue anodized aluminum Kriska® curtains, which link up to make a light and versatile mesh screen on the upper part of the walls which is both decorative and functional in that it allows spaces to be defined while providing light, colour and movement similar to that of water. The space has been organized to operate on one practically rectangular level, where the various areas are marked by differences in height.

The lighting, shapes, colours, furniture and the space itself create the experience of forming part of an undersea world. The light shining onto the different elements is broken up into tiny shafts, resembling the rays of light under the sea, bathing every detail in an underwater glimmer. One of the crucial areas for more sophisticated clients, the VIP area, is designed with vertical rows of different plant species, dividing the space into geometric modules of varying height to create a natural, living environment which both protects and provides privacy for those who want to get away from the crowds.” (photography: Rafael Vargas)

After putting together a list with 10 most interesting architecture projects of 2010, we decided to take this idea further and also display a countdown of the best apartments in 2010, according to your Facebook shares, as they are currently registered on Freshome. #10. We begin our list with this stylish apartment by UNStudio located in downtown Manhattan, New York. Called The Collector’s Loft, this beautiful crib combines the elegance of an art gallery with the coziness of a common apartment. The owner wanted a special place for depositing his books and different artifacts he had collected throughout the years, a crib that would offer him the comfort of interacting with art.

#9. Red Nest is an ingenious apartment located in Paris. Envisioned by designer Paul Coudamy, this original project houses a bedroom, a dressing area and a home office, all “squeezed” into just 23 square meters. This red and white apartment features incredible solutions that counterweight the lack of space, turning it into an ideal home, without making any compromises regarding style or function.

#8. Here is a delightful and spectacular looking apartment located in Darlinghurst, New South Wales, Australia. Designed by Weir Phillips Architects, this three bedroom apartment bursts with freedom and craziness, which is what inspired us to say that this is the ultimate bachelor’s crib. The living room is the focal point of the house and accommodates some of the wackiest elements this loft has to offer, such as a SPA and a BBQ section. Other spectacular features of this apartment include a retractable roof, a concrete floor, a large study area and an indoor office with abundant storage space, intriguing art works and many, many more.

#7. This 94 square meter apartment has a privileged location on the corner of the building. You are looking at a nicely arranged flat (where else but in Sweden?) with three rooms, one beside the park, with unobstructed views over the green expanse outside, and one facing the street, while the kitchen overlooks the pleasant and peaceful courtyard. Appealing indeed.

#6. Everyone loves a home with a view! This incredible apartment in Darling Point, Sydney has an incredible location which allows its inhabitants to enjoy stunning views of the harbor and Opera House. This apartment takes up the whole 16'th floor of a circular tower, which makes things… panoramic.

#5. In one of the most populated cities in the world, where 30 square meter apartments are a way of living, one has to be creative. How many rooms can fit in a 30 sq meters apartment? One? Ok, maybe two, if you count the hallway. Prepare to get shocked: Gary Chang managed to fit 24 rooms in such a place and each and everyone of them has its unique personality. #4. My Life in 80m² is an ingenious residential living project meant to demonstrate that the size of a crib has little to do with the comfort and design quality it can provide. This idea comes from Italian company Poliform and its originality can be found in a series of unusual combinations of elements and colors.

#3. This next exquisite penthouse comes from the amazing collection of Sotheby`s for sale portfolio. Located in New York City`s gorgeous TriBeCa neighborhood , the luxurious penthouse apartment has an extended space that measures over 10,000 square feet, all designed and carefully maintained so that luxury can be recognized in every corner.

#2. Your second best happens to be a beautiful small apartment (61 sqare meters) located in Sweden. You are looking at a crib that is perfect for socializing but also for meditation in solitude. The color palette is cheerful, yet subtle and tasteful. With wide and spacious interiors, this home looks very warm and inviting.

#1. Looks familiar? This crib was unofficially voted the best apartment of 2010 by our Freshome readers and it is a project that manages to maximize space and create a cozy living environment as well. The East Village Studio comes from JPDA Architects, stretches over an area of 46 square meters (500 square feet) and was built as a little “nest” for the owners who also work here. It has all the utilities a common looking contemporary home has and dare we say a lot more.

Contemporary Street Art in NYC: Pixel Pour 2.0

The streets of the city that never sleeps are filled with amazing things: from street art to installations and mind-blowing artistic projects. These expressions of artistic minds can be found all throughout the city. Take for example, this next art installation, caught on camera by gnom3sayin and uploaded on his Flickr photostream. The 3D interpretation of a huge pouring faucet can be found on Mercer Street in New York City. Before the three-dimensional version, named Pixel Pour 2.0, there was the simple Pixel Pour, a beautiful street art figure that you can see in the images. The upgraded version has a modern design and it encapsulates the idea of pixelated water pouring from a black faucet.

#10 We’ve seen so many impressive displays of architecture from A-Cero that it is no wonder they made it into your top 10 list. The Concrete House II is a family project located in Madrid and stretches over a surface of no less than 1.600 square meters. The first impression when seeing its unusual architecture with gray concrete and vegetation ramps is that you are looking at a bunker entrance. The roof ensures this project’s ecological features as it contains solar tubular collectors, making this residence a sustainable project.

9# This unbelievable looking residence seems sprung out of a science-fiction movie. Rising on the edge of a cliff measuring no less than seventy meters, House Holman has a spectacular architecture. The project comes from Durbach Block Architects and is located in Dover Heights, a coastal, eastern suburb of Sydney. According to the designers, the project was inspired by a famous art work belonging to Picasso, entitled “The Bathers”.

#8 For those of you who are easily impressed by gold, glamor, glitter and gadgets, this Majorca residence has all these and more. This giant home stretches over an area of 10,700-square-feet and was recently available for sale on eBay, for the sum of $28,000,000. The golden residence was inspired by the creations of Lugi Colani, a renowned German industrial designer whose works have a rounded, organic form. More than 1,230 square feet of 24-carat gold are said to be a part of this opulent residence whose appearance definitely has a strong effect.

#7 An 1870 Gothic Church in Utrecht was transformed into a contemporary home by Zecc Architects and Thomas Haukes in 2009.“WoonkerkXL” (“Residential Church XL”) impresses due to the unexpected perspectives and overall immaculate feel. Several art works and decorative elements create a more friendly atmosphere and divulge the true nature of this seemingly holy space, which ranked 7 in your countdown.

#6 Juvet Landscape Hotel was designed by Jensen & Skodvin Arkitektkontor(JSA) and is located in the heart of a picturesque forest, on the banks of the river Valdolla, in Norway. Surrounded by scenic views, this type of crib is an oasis of peacefulness. #5 This magnificent looking home comes from Architectural Bureau G. Natkevicius & Partners and is located in Lithuania.This project was resembled with “Noah’s Ark”, a place where all the family gets together in order to escape the urban jungle. Featuring a fascinated cantilevered volume, a garage hidden underneath, floor to ceiling windows and contemporary arrangements, this home is a true display of art and good taste.

#4 The Fab Lab House comes from Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and is a tribute to eco-living. This Madrid-based project generates three times the energy it consumes and also houses an orchard in order to produce food. It may not look very appealing, but it is a sustainable project that certainly sets an example.

#3 This incredible looking home was designed by Spanish architect Ramón Esteve and combines contemporary living with the freedom of a holiday home. The focal point of this residence is its amazing infinity pool that creates a dream-like atmosphere. Some of the exterior walls have an impressive rocky finish probably inspired by the beautiful natural landscape surrounding this construction.

#2 Querosene House comes from architects grupoSP and is located in São Paulo, Brazil. Amazingly enough, this project was especially developed in order to “accommodate” no less that 7500 books. We find this home truly spectacular and educational from all points of view. And you guys obviously share our opinion, since this mind-blowing crib ranks 2 on your list.

# 1 The Fish House is an exotic residence designed by Guz Architects and located in Singapore. Said to be a “modern tropical bungalow”, this home is perfectly integrated in its climate and environment. The curved roofs, which symbolize the sea waves, are almost totally covered with thin bendable photovoltaic panels supplying enough energy to the house, while the remaining area is used as a green roof giving residents some outdoor leisure spaces. Sustainable, eccentric and displaying a tasteful opulence- just some of the characteristics that make this architecture project number one in your Top 10 Homes for 2010.

Some time ago, we showcased one of Kate Hume`s interior design. Today it`s time to go deeper into her artistic decorating and see the amazing interiors of this next Amsterdam townhouse. The skillful artist constructed interiors that are both pleasant and highly detailed. Each piece of furniture and pattern, every shape and colour has been carefully chosen to express a comfortable and distinguished living style. The best kitchen cabinets are ones with a story to tell, the kind that inspire us to dream up a creative vision for our own homes. I’d like to share 10 of the most unique kitchen cabinet styles out there—probably even some you’ve never heard of…

#1—Mismatched-DIY

My personal favorite, DIY cabinets are for the creatives—the forward-thinkers. Materials are as vast as your imagination, from recycled shipping crates to thrift-shop furniture finds to quirky metal filing cabinets. Best of all, it’s cheap!

#2—Floating

Drawing on the bright colors and high-gloss sheen of Italian contemporary style, the 36E8 Kitchen Suite by Lago takes minimalism to a whole new level. Wall-mounted structures maximize floor space in a slick, geometrical pattern reminiscent of pixilated video games. The concept is striking, to say the least.

#3—Storybook

Sometimes, the most interesting kitchen cabinets are ones that don’t exist at all. In this real-life storybook home, materials come directly from the earth. Compartments are dug out of the smooth, curved sink and countertops to make room for open shelving. It’s so adorable I could weep.

#4—Mid-Century Modern

These are mid-century cabinets in an original southern Californian Eichler home. What the owners did to make the kitchen pop was refinish the cabinet doors in splashy orange and green. They also sanded and re-stained the wood trim, then installed reclaimed midcentury light fixtures to complete the authentic look.

#5—Luxury Glass

This kitchen blows me away. The Isola Linear by Toyo features a cantilevered structure for a kitchen that seems to be stacked yet floating at the same time. Cabinets are finished with Venetian glass mosaics and five types of etchings.

#6—Reclaimed Wood

Aside from looking incredible, reclaimed wood cabinets are about as eco-friendly as it gets. Some, like the style shown above, are made from repurposed wood (e.g. felled trees, old barn wood or discarded materials). I love the natural-grain look.

#7—Concept & Futuristic

What’s most fascinating about concept kitchens is that they virtually do away with cabinetry. Designed for “homes of the future,” these kitchens are compact, curved and outstandingly efficient. ANZ Center, Melbourne: Colorful, Creative Office

Congratulations to Australian architectural office Hassell for taking out first place at the 2010 World Architectural Festival for best interiors and fit out award with their project, “ANZ Business Centre”. Located on the Yarra River, this is an impressive building.

This banking headquarters is designed to accommodate 6,500 employees making it the largest single-tenanted commercial building in Australia. With such a large amount of people to cater for, the building has been designed to reinvent the traditional office layout. The designers have incorporated ‘hubs’, each developed for specific tasks, with each area given its own feel created by using colour and given a unique name.

Who wouldn’t want to work here? The atrium looks more like a mini city than an office building, natural light filtering through the area with cafe style seating areas everywhere, as well as office spaces overlooking the walkway.

The use of bright colours throughout the individually named ‘hubs’ creates unique environments in which to relax, socialise, hold meetings or just recharge for the day ahead.

An example of the workspaces, certainly a creative way to section off different work stations.

Each ‘hub’ is personalized with its own name including click, play and move.

Finally we have the client meeting breakout space, an area where you can help yourself to coffee, bask in the sunlight and get down to business.

Decorating your Home for Christmas

Christmas is an extremely busy time of year. By the time you get you shopping done, gifts wrapped and your cookies and cakes baked, it’s likely you don’t have the energy left to put into extravagant decorating. Although less than energetic, you still want your home decorated for Christmas. After all, Christmas is just not the same without lights and decorations.

Decorating your home for Christmas doesn’t have to be stressful. There are many things you can do and items you can use to dress up your home for this wonderful season. One suggestion when decorating your home for Christmas is using ribbon. If you have a decorating theme for Christmas, regarding color, choose ribbon to correspond with your theme. You can tie ribbons to all sorts of items in your home such as chair backs, wreathes, basket handles, stair railings and even doorknobs. Ribbons and bows are very festive. A good idea is to choose ribbon which can be easily untied and retied. This way you can reuse the ribbon another Christmas season.

Using holiday tableware is nice when decorating your home for Christmas. Search your home for anything Christmas, plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, any piece of tableware that has a Christmas theme. Make sure to use these items each and every meal, every day throughout the Christmas season. Another good idea is to buy a few pieces each year. In time you’ll have enough tableware to serve the entire community.

Lighting is important when decorating your home for Christmas. During the month of December turn off your lights. Make use of your candles in every room of your home. Place candles on the dining table, on the coffee and end tables in the living room and perhaps place a nice scented pillar candle in the bathroom. Don’t just put them there for decorations but also make sure to light them each night. If you have a fireplace, make sure to light it and enjoy it. A fireplace creates a cozy atmosphere which is nice when guests are visiting.

Decorating your home for Christmas should always include a Christmas tree. After decorating the tree with your homemade ornaments and strung popcorn, use the leftover branches to make arrangements for your home. Put the greens in a basket or bowl, add pinecones, bows and ornaments. Use the branches to make swags to hang over doors throughout your home. When decorating your home for Christmas, why not use snow, artificial snow to add a sparkle to your home. Sprinkle it on the dining table, the hutch or the fireplace. Use ornaments which reflect light and hang them around your home, from doors or even indoor trees and plants. This will definitely look dazzling at night as the candle light flickers off the ornaments. Decorating your home for Christmas shouldn’t be a dreadful task but a delightful experience. Our homes are usually the most expensive single item we ever buy. Not only do they represent a significant financial investment, but our home is a big emotional investment. They are the places where we raise our families and celebrate our lives. Our homes are our refuge from a busy world - a safe place where we live, love and grow together. Yet in the U.S. alone there are more than 500,000 residential fires every year that are serious enough to require a call to the fire department. Worse yet, every year more than 4,000 Americans die in home fires and approximately 20,000 are injured. Tragic statistics indeed, but equally tragic is that the vast majority of these fires and related injuries and deaths are preventable.

Top Ten Tips for Fire Safety

1. Install Smoke Alarms
The single most important purchase you can make for your home is smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms can double your chances of surviving a fire. Most deaths that occur in home fires aren’t from fire, but from smoke. Homes should have at least one one smoke alarm on every level. To make certain smoke alarms are fully functional they should be tested monthly, kept free of dust and have the batteries replaced annually. The smoke alarm itself should be replaced every ten years, or as recommended by the manufacturer.

2. Plan an Escape Route
If a fire does break out, you must get out fast. Being awakened by a smoke alarm at 2:00 a.m. is not the time to have to think through how to get you and your family to safety. You must plan ahead by sitting down with your family and go over an escape plan that includes at least two exits from every room. If you live in an apartment building, your escape plan must not include elevators. Finally, when you develop your escape plan decide on a safe meeting place outdoors where everyone meets after the escape. Your household should practice the escape plan two times a year.

3. Beware of Smoking
The leading cause of fire deaths is careless smoking. Avoid smoking in bed and take great care to make large ashtrays readily available to smokers throughout your household. Cigarettes can smolder under and around upholstered furniture unnoticed only to ignite into a full blaze minutes later.

4. Take Care Cooking
Never leave your cooking unattended. Furthermore, be aware of flammable materials like curtains, dish towels or loose fitting clothing around cooking areas. To avoid accidental spills of hot oil or boiling water be sure the handles of pots and pans are turned inward on the stove so they can’t be bumped or grabbed by children. Should cooking oil in a pan catch fire cover the pan immediately with a lid. Under no circumstances should you pour water on a grease fire. This will cause the fire to spatter and spread.

5. Space for Space Heaters
Whether electric, kerosene or some other fuel space heaters need space. They should be kept at least three feet away from anything that can burn. Always keep children and pets away from heaters and never leave them unattended when you leave home.

6. Matches, Lighters and Children Don’t Mix
Children are often fascinated by fire. Teach your children that matches and lighters are tools, not toys, should never be played with and are to be used only by adults. Store all matches and lighters where children can neither see them nor reach them. Because children are naturally curious, don’t hesitate to check under your children’s bed, in closets and other places where they may hide matches or lighters in their rooms.

7. Use Electricity Carefully
Promptly replace cracked or frayed cords on appliances. If an appliance sparks, smells or smokes unplug it immediately and have it repaired or replaces. An all too common cause of electrical fires is the improper use of extension cords. Never run extension cords under rugs and never use an extension cord to overload a circuit. Only a trained professional should service circuit breaker or fuse boxes. If a fuse must be replaced, use only the proper sized fuse for that circuit.

8. Stay Low Under Smoke
If you must escape a fire, stay close to the floor. Smoke and toxic gasses rise, and the air near the floor is cleaner.

9. Stop, Drop and Roll
If your clothing catches fire, DO NOT RUN! Running feeds more air to the flames and will cause them to spread more rapidly. Instead, stop where you are, drop to the floor or ground, cover your face with your hands and roll around until the flames are covered. Should you encounter a person whose clothing is on fire, cover them with a blanket, rug or coat and roll them on the ground.

10. Treating a Burn
The best quick treatment for minor burns is to run cool water over the burn for 10 to 15 minutes. This will cool the burn. Never use ice on a burn. Using ice on a burn may damage the skin or even cause mild frostbite. And contrary to what your grandmother may have told you, don’t apply butter or any grease to a burn. It will prevent air from reaching the burn. If skin is burned severely enough to cause blisters or charring, seek medical attention immediately. Severe burns can easily become infected.

Preventing fires and fire related injuries and death isn’t a matter of luck. It takes planning. Every household should have a plan that includes a home safety checklist, smoke detectors, escape plan and regular safety audit. Make protecting your family, household and valuables from fire a priority. Your life may depend on it.

Interior lighting that is subject to a timer may confuse burglars as to whether there are family members inside. Outdoor lighting that uses motion sensing technology makes it difficult for robbers to gain undetected access to any vulnerable areas of your home.

The two primary doors burglars will attempt to gain access through are the garage and back doors. They usually are the easiest to compromise and they provide the greatest concealment. Glass paneled doors are a means of easy entrance into any home so consider replacing them with solid core doors when possible. Replace old locks with high quality mechanisms capable of resisting lock-picking attempts as well as prying and twisting. We also recommend the use of quality deadbolts. The use of a peephole is also advised when CCTV technology is not in use or in tandem when possible. If your home has sliding glass doors you can simply place a wooden dowel or similar commercial grade products like the charley-bar in the track to make it difficult for the door to slide should the latch be compromised.

With all the emphasis on doors we would be remiss if we failed to mention a burglars favourite means of accessing your home. It is far more likely that a window will be left either open or unlocked than a door. Because windows generally use latch technology, a secondary blocking device should be considered. Should you require nighttime ventilation be sure to block your windows so that they will not open more than a few millimeters.

Should your home be accessed by burglars, a home safe can further ensure the safety of your most valuable possessions.

Neighbours can also be an effective ally in keeping your home safe. Neighbourhood partnerships have assisted home owners in self policing the homes in their immediate area. Those participating in Neighbourhood Watch programmes can assist others by picking up mail, handbills and newspapers. A burglar will often look for homes with an accumulation of newspapers or postal deliveries as a means of assessing the potential success of a robbery attempt.

Should your home be robbed, there is a way to assist police in the potential recovery of your personal property. By engraving personal information on your valuables it makes it much more difficult for burglars to attempt to sell your property to others. When it is determined that the property does not belong to the seller, police may well be called thus increasing the chances that your possessions will be returned. A few minutes marking your valuables can prove beneficial should a burglary occur. You should also consider photographing and recording the serial numbers of high end possessions. Make sure a copy of this information is stored in a place other than your home to ensure its availability in the event of a loss.
